PDA – Public Displays of Affection
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (4/20/2021) – Charlotte artist Julio Gonzalez will present a new performance in the PDA series. The PDA project is an examination of cultural norms around touch and personal space. What does it mean to be touched or to touch in public? When I began this project in February of 2020 I didn’t realize that we would be living in a world of social distancing where to stay safe meant to not touch.
The performance utilizes couples dance from Latin America in public spaces to explore cultural experiences with touch. Two performers in body suits that hide gender and race will dance together to music only they can hear. Performances will take place in spaces not traditionally used for dance, such as public transit stops, greenways, beer gardens.
Performance Date:
May 1st
1 - 2pm (subject to change due to weather)
Location: Plaza in front of Jenny’s Ice Cream SouthEnd. Charlotte, NC
